Mountain Height and Mean Sea Level.

How do we measure the height of a mountain? Is the sea level same for all oceans?
There are several methods of measuring the height of a mountain. In a physics-based method, the height of the mountain is related to the barometric pressure which reduces with increasing height by a well established formula. Approximately a height of about 115metres reduces the atmospheric pressure by 10 mm of mercury.
Thus a measurement of the atmospheric pressure at the top of the mountain would provide the height. However this method has two main deficiencies. First, because the barometer reading also depends on the atmospheric temperature, a complete temperature profile along the height of the mountain needs to be known.
This is not only difficult but varies with time; so the height measurement by this method can be inaccurate. Secondly, one needs to climb the mountain in order to measure its height. The following methods overcome these problems easily.
In one of the methods, the length of the shadow of the mountain is compared with the length of the shadow of a pole of known height. The height of the mountain is calculated as the product of the height of the pole and the length of the shadow of the mountain divided by the length of the shadow of the pole. This is a simple but elegant method.
In yet another method, the angular elevations of the tip of the mountain are noted from two points on the ground along a line passing through the base of the mountain. Such a line is easily identified by joining the shadow of the tip of the mountain at two different time of the day.
Use of the trigonometric tangent ratio of the two angles of elevation and the accurately measured distance, between the two points of observation yields the required height of the mountain. In this method the two chosen points are required to have same mean sea level (MSL). Because d is in the range of about 500metres, the MSL does not differ significantly.
Therefore, this method gives fairly accurate value of the height of the mountain.
Coming to the second question, the MSL of all the oceans of the world is not the same. The mean sea level at the south-east end of the Panama Canal, in the Pacific Ocean, is seen to be higher than at the north-west side in the Atlantic Ocean.
Such variations arise from the oceanic currents, variations in atmospheric pressure, temperature and local salinity. In the same ocean itself, the earth rotation alters the MSL at different latitudes. Even temporal variation in MSL is observed at the same location mainly owing to tidal conditions.

Great sayings of Sri Ramakrishna

You see many stars in the sky at night, but not when the sun rises. Can you therefore say that there are no stars in the heavens during the day? O man, because you cannot find God in the days of your ignorance, say not that there is no God. *

Man suffers so much simply for want of devotion to God. One should therefore adopt such means as would help the thought of God to arise in the mind at the last moment of one's life. The means is practice of devotion to God.*

There are pearls in the deep sea, but you must hazard all perils to get them. If you fail to get at them by a single dive, do not conclude that the sea is without them. Dive again and again, and you are sure to be rewarded in the end. So also in your quest for the Lord, if your first attempt to see Him proves futile, do not lose heart.*

A man who spends his time in discussing the good and the bad qualities of others simply wastes his own time. For it is time spent neither in thinking about one's own self nor about the Supreme Self, but in fruitless thiinking of others' selves.*

Be not a traitor to your thoughts. Be sincere, act according to your thoughts; and you shall surely succeed. Pray with a sincere and simple heart, and your prayers will be heard.*

For You : Posted by Neethuzz

Just to look in your eyes again
Just to lay in your arms
Just to be the first one always there for you
Just to live in your laughter
Just to sing in your heart
Just to be everyone of your dreams come true

Just to sit by your window
Just to touch in the night
Just to offer a prayer each day for you
Just to long for your kisses
Just to dream of your sighs
Just to know that I’d give my life for you

For you for the rest of my life
For you all the best of my life
For you alone, only for you

Just to wake up each morning
Just to you by my side
Just to know that you’re never really far away
Just a reason for living
Just to say I adore
Just to know that you’re here in my heart to stay

For you for the rest of my life
For you all the best of my life
For you alone, only for you

Just the words of a love song
Just the beat of my heart
Just the pledge of my life, my love, for you.

Love asked Friendship why are you
in the world when I am here?
Friendship smiled and said,
to spread smiles in those
eyes in which you
leave tears....

Risking my heart again....

It's hard for me to say this,
It's hard to put into words.
The way I feel about you,
Cuz I'm afraid of getting hurt.

I'm afraid that I'm falling for you,
My heart has hit the floor.
I hate to be without you,
It makes me want you more.

I love it when you hold me,
And look into my eyes.
I love to feel your body,
When it's pressed against mine.

I love to wake up next to you,
All curled up in your arms.
Where I know you'll keep me safe,
From any kind of harm.

Every time I'm with you,
There's a constant smile on my face.
The piece missing from my heart,
You have somehow replaced.

I want to tell you,
How I really feel.
But I find it hard to admit,
That this is all so real.

You know that I care about you,
But you don't know how much.
I find myself falling in love,
With someone I feel I can trust.

I don't want to scare you away,
I just wanted you to know.
The way I feel about you,
As it continues to grow.

Once again I am risking my heart,
In hopes that you feel the same.
But if you don't, let me know,
So I can deal with the pain.

Researcher cracks Mac in 10 seconds at PWN2OWN, wins $5k

Charlie Miller, a security researcher who hacked a Macintosh in two minutes last year at
CanSecWest's PWN2OWN contest, improved his time today by breaking into another Macintosh in under 10 seconds.

Miller, an analyst at Independent Security Evaluators in Baltimore, walked off with a $5,000 cash prize and the MacBook he hacked.

"I can't talk about the details of the vulnerability, but it was a Mac, fully patched, with Safari, fully patched," said Miller on Wednesday, not long after he had won the prize. "It probably took five or 10 seconds." He confirmed that he had researched and written the exploit before he arrived at the challenge.

The PWN2OWN rules stated that the researcher could provide a URL that hosted his exploit, replicating the common hacker tactic of enticing users to malicious sites where they are infected with malware. "I gave them the link, they clicked on it, and that was it," said Miller. "I did a few things to show that I had full control of the Mac."

Two weeks ago, Miller predicted that Safari running on the Macintosh would be the first to fall.

PWN2OWN's sponsor, 3Com Corp.'s TippingPoint unit, paid Miller $5,000 for the rights to the vulnerability he exploited and the exploit code he used. As it has at past challenges, it reported the vulnerability to on-site Apple representatives. "Apple has it, and they're working on it," added Miller.

According to Terri Forslof, manager of security response at TippingPoint, another researcher later broke into a Sony laptop that was running Windows 7 by exploiting a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 8. "Safari and IE both went down," she said in an e-mail.

TippingPoint's Twitter feed added a bit more detail to Forslof's quick message: "nils just won the sony viao with a brilliant IE8 bug!"

The Measure Of My Love

Constant As The Sands Of Time,
Falling Grain By Grain
Higher Than The Skies Above
That Bring The Springtime Rain

Countless As The Twinkling Stars
Scattered Across The Night
Hotter Than The Searing Sun
Which Burns By Day So Bright

Tender As Lover's Touch With Passion
At Its Peak
More Helpless Than a Newborn Babe
Lying Young And Weak
Lovely As The Sweetest Bird Singing Loves
Sweet Song Longer Than The End Of Time
And Then Go Teice As Long
Sweet As All The Honey Ever Made By Any Bee
Stronger Than The Mighty Oak Or Any Tree
Lonely As The Worlds Last Woman

Because We Are Apart
Deeper Than The Deepest Hole
The Hole That's In My Heart
My Love For You Is All These Things
And More Than I Can Say
My Love For You Is All I Have
To Get Me Through Each Day.

My mother hired a hitman to kill me: The shocking story of a Muslim woman whose parents disapproved of her Western lifestyle

Sofia HayatThe text message forwarded to me from my younger sister Saira was concise and chilling: 'Mum's sent a hit man to kill you,' it read. 'Be careful.'

As I read those words, my first instinct wasn't fear or even shock, but simply survival.

I'd become accustomed to behaviour like this from both my parents - behaviour that anyone else would find abhorrent - and I was emotionally numb to their threats.

But I also knew that my sister's warning was deadly serious and my life was in real danger. I'd been in hiding for several weeks when I received the text.

I was born in Gravesend in Kent in 1974 and brought up there in a devout Muslim family with three sisters and two brothers.

My father Zammurrad, a factory worker, was a deeply religious man but violent towards my mother Surriya and my sisters Zarqa, now 38, Saira, 33, and Tahira, 32.

I tried to be an obedient daughter, praying up to five times a day, but I never felt loved by my parents - or that I really belonged.

In turn, my parents viewed me as something of an oddity. Perhaps it was because I loved performing.

From as young as five, acting and singing was in my blood and at school I won so many competitions for writing songs that if the teachers wanted a song for an assembly they'd ask me to write one and I'd get up on stage and sing it.

My love of singing and dancing wasn't exactly encouraged at home, but it wasn't a big problem when I was young. But as I hit my teens, my parents told me I could no longer continue.

I was to forget my childish fantasies of becoming an actress, as in their eyes singing and dancing were on a par with prostitution.

As I grew older, my father started placing increasingly severe restrictions on my life. I was forbidden from making friends with other children and lived a very lonely existence.

On the one occasion I was given special permission to attend a birthday party of a girl who lived 100 metres down the road, I was allowed to stay for only an hour. My life was just school and home, with no free time for myself.

Brownie lies on the exam table at an Indiana veterinarian's office after being shot through the head with an arrow. Below, after the arrow is removed.

Me-Owwwww!

An orange tabby named Brownie was shot in the head with an arrow and amazingly survived.

The 13-inch arrow only pierced the kitty's muscle, avoiding his skull and eyes - and a vet in rural Indiana was able to remove it.

"He's just a miracle cat," said Sarah Hayes, chief executive of the Monroe County Humane Association.

"He was just purring and rubbing up against people, even with the arrow in his head," Hayes said.

"He's a loving, sweet, sweet cat."

Brownie had been missing for three days when his owner Dillon Eads saw him come up over a hill Aug. 28 with the arrow in his head.

Eads, 83, called police right away.

He suspects that someone was cruelly using his beloved pet for target practice.

"I never felt so sorry for anything in my life. It just broke my heart," he tearfully told local television stations.

The humane association is offering a $1,450 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who hurt Brownie.

The good-natured feline, which even loves dogs, is healing well and will be reunited with Eads next week, Hayes said.

He has eight lives left, anyway.

"He's on the adventure of his life," Hayes said.
