Mountain Height and Mean Sea Level.
There are several methods of measuring the height of a mountain. In a physics-based method, the height of the mountain is related to the barometric pressure which reduces with increasing height by a well established formula. Approximately a height of about 115metres reduces the atmospheric pressure by 10 mm of mercury.
Thus a measurement of the atmospheric pressure at the top of the mountain would provide the height. However this method has two main deficiencies. First, because the barometer reading also depends on the atmospheric temperature, a complete temperature profile along the height of the mountain needs to be known.
This is not only difficult but varies with time; so the height measurement by this method can be inaccurate. Secondly, one needs to climb the mountain in order to measure its height. The following methods overcome these problems easily.
In one of the methods, the length of the shadow of the mountain is compared with the length of the shadow of a pole of known height. The height of the mountain is calculated as the product of the height of the pole and the length of the shadow of the mountain divided by the length of the shadow of the pole. This is a simple but elegant method.
In yet another method, the angular elevations of the tip of the mountain are noted from two points on the ground along a line passing through the base of the mountain. Such a line is easily identified by joining the shadow of the tip of the mountain at two different time of the day.
Use of the trigonometric tangent ratio of the two angles of elevation and the accurately measured distance, between the two points of observation yields the required height of the mountain. In this method the two chosen points are required to have same mean sea level (MSL). Because d is in the range of about 500metres, the MSL does not differ significantly.
Therefore, this method gives fairly accurate value of the height of the mountain.
Coming to the second question, the MSL of all the oceans of the world is not the same. The mean sea level at the south-east end of the Panama Canal, in the Pacific Ocean, is seen to be higher than at the north-west side in the Atlantic Ocean.
Such variations arise from the oceanic currents, variations in atmospheric pressure, temperature and local salinity. In the same ocean itself, the earth rotation alters the MSL at different latitudes. Even temporal variation in MSL is observed at the same location mainly owing to tidal conditions.

The Former President of India DR. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam 's Speech in Hyderabad .
Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements?
We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?
We are the first in milk production.
We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.
We are the second largest producer of wheat.
We are the second largest producer of rice.
Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.
I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to.The gory details of killings,
bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime.. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign T.Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.
Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India . For her, you and I will have to build this developed India . You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.
Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance.
Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours.
YOU say that our government is inefficient.
YOU say that our laws are too old.
YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage.
YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke. The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination.
YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits.
YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it?
Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - 'YOURS'. Give him a face - 'YOURS'. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground links as they are. You pay $5 (approx. Rs. 60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU come back to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity… In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai . YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah.
YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, 'see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.'YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, 'Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost.' YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand .
Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston??? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India?
Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay, Mr. Tinaikar, had a point to make. 'Rich people's dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place,' he said. 'And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels?
In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan.
Will the Indian citizen do that here?' He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility.
We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.
We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity.
This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.
When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to change the system?
What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.
Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England . When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.
Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too…. I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians…..
'ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY'
Lets do what India needs from us

Self Management
Here is a list of things that help you in self management and which will in turn lead you to the path of success: -
-) Look at every new opportunity as an exciting and new-life experience.
-) Be a professional who exhibits self-confidence and self-assurance in your potential to complete any task.
-) Agree with yourself in advance that you will have a good attitude toward the upcoming task.
-) Frequently ask, "Is what I am doing right now moving me toward my goals?"
-) Do it right the first time and you will not have to take time later to fix it.
-) Accept responsibility for your job successes and failures. Do not look for a scapegoat.
-) Do not view things you do as a "job." View all activities as a challenge.
-) Use your subconscious mind by telling it to do what you do want. Instead of telling yourself, "I can't do that very well," say, "I can do this very well."-) Give yourself points for completing tasks on your "to-do" list in priority order. When you reach 10 points, reward yourself.
-) Practice your personal beliefs. It may be helpful each morning to take 15 minutes to gather your thoughts and say a prayer.
-) Make a commitment to show someone a specific accomplishment on a certain date. The added urgency will help you feel motivated to have it done.
-) Practice self-determination, wanting to do it for yourself.
-) Believe that you can be what you want to be.
-) Never criticize yourself as having a weakness. There is no such thing. You are only talking about a present undeveloped skill or part of yourself that if you so chose, you can change. You do not have any weakness, only untapped potential.
-) Be pleasant all the time-no matter what the situation.
-) Challenge yourself to do things differently than you have in the past. It provides new ideas and keeps you interested.
-) Talk to yourself. A self-talk using positive affirmation is something that is common among all great achievers. They convince themselves that they can accomplish their goals.
-) Create your own "motivation board" by putting up notes of things you need to do on a bulletin board or special wall space. It is an easily visible way to see what you need to work on. When an item is done, remove the note. Also keep your goals listed and pictured on your board.
-) Stay interested in what you are doing. Keep looking for what is interesting in your work. Change your perspective and look at it as someone outside your job would,
-) Establish personal incentives and rewards to help maintain your own high enthusiasm and performance level.

Robot can perform surgery on beating heart
Robotic surgery allows doctors to operate on patients by controlling a machine that is far more sterile, precise and flexible than the human hand. By calculating the movement of a heart with millimeter accuracy and shifting its instruments accordingly, Waseda University’s robot can operate on a beating heart as if it was frozen.
The Waseda crew’s robot has been operating on pig’s hearts since 2004, with a claimed 95% tracking accuracy. The goal now is to get it up to 98% before it can brought into an operating room.
Samsung watch phone calls in early
Looks like Samsung is going to beat LG to the punch with the release of its S9110 watch phone due to hit stores before the rival LG GD910 – in France anyway. Aimed at Dick Tracy fans and gadget lovers alike the S9110 even manages to squeeze a few more features into its diminutive body, including a larger 1.76-inch touchscreen (to the GD910’s 1.43-inch), Bluetooth 2.1 and Outlook email sync.
Like the LG GD910, the Samsung offering also packs an MP3 player, speakerphone, and voice recognition. The watch phone also supports 900/1800MHz, is powered by a 630mAh battery, and has 40MB of internal memory - so you probably won’t have enough room for your entire music library. The 176 x 220 pixel, 262k color TFT TSP display is protected behind scratch-proof glass and the stainless steel body measures just 57.5 x 41.1 x 11.98mm and weighs 91g.
The Samsung S9110 is set to hit shelves in France this month for around EUR€450 (approx. USD$639 at time of publication), a month ahead of the LG GD910. No word on wider availability as yet.
Creating a list of files within a directory
There’s been so many times where I needed to get a list of files that reside within a certain directory. There’s software out there to do it (like DDFilecatcher), but who wants to pay for it? It seems like it would be so simple just to create a little script that’ll take the names of all the files I have in a folder and save it to a .txt file. Well, here’s how you do it.
- Open notepad
- Put this code into the file
dir /b>filelist.txt
- Save it as “filelist.bat”
- Place filelist.bat into the directory you need to get the list from
- Click on filelist.bat from within the folder
- You’ll now have a .txt doc called “filelist.txt”
Simple, right? This has saved me so much time… it’s ridiculous.

15 Brain Boosting Activities

If you dont keep your mind active, studies show that your brain loses some of its functionality as you age, which causes memory loss, brain fog, and even Alzheimers.
A well-stimulated brain also elevates your mood, which helps you feel better on the inside.
Here are 15 brain boosting activities:
1. Play games that challenge and stimulate your mind. These include:
* Picture Puzzles
* Strategy Games
* Crossword Puzzles
* Card Games
* Deduction Games (such as Clue)
* Visualization Puzzles
* Optical Illusions
2. Reading stimulates the brain as it activates your imagination. Reading also helps with memory retention and problem solving, especially if youre reading a mystery. Also, self-help books stimulate your brain by helping you to think for yourself, as well as find solutions in your mind..
3. Exercising helps circulate blood that carries oxygen to your brain. Over the long-term, exercise is proven to increase brainpower and even create new neurons.
4. Stimulate your brain with meditation.. Meditation has been shown to increase your IQ, relieve stress, and promote a higher level of brain functioning. Meditation also stimulates the prefrontal cortex of the brain, the area of the brain responsible for advanced thinking, ability and performance.
5. Deep breathing helps deliver oxygen to your brain. Oxygen helps you be more alert and awake. As little as 10 to 15 minutes of deep breathing daily can increase brain functionality.
6. Taking fish oil supplements is literally like membrane material for the brain.. The two primary components in fish oil, DHA and EPA, strengthen the emotional center of the brain and boost focus.
7. Studies have proven that listening to music strengthens the right hemisphere of the brain and actually changes the structure of it. Also, people who listen to music are shown to be more emotionally intelligent than those who dont.

How to hide .rar files within picture files
This tutorial will show you how to hide .rar files within .jpg files - so that anyone who opens the picture would never know there was another file hidden within it.
- Select the RAR file that you want to hide. For this example the file I want to hide is called files.rar and the picture I’m going to hide it in is called warren.jpg. Copy both the files into the same folder.
- Then open the command prompt by selecting Start -> Run -> in the space provided enter cmd and click OK.
- Navigate to the the folder that you stored the files in. I kept them in the Downloads folder found within my My Documents folder, so I issued the commands cd “My Documents” and then cd Downloads. Now type the following command: copy /b warren.jpg + files.rar warren2.jpg Remember - replace warren.jpg, files.rar and warren2.jpg with the names of your files.
- This will embed the archive thus hiding it. You can open warren2.jpg with a picture viewer and there will be no indication that there’s a .rar file hidden within it.
- To open the hidden archive (.rar file), simply open warren2.jpg (your picture) with WinRAR, or the RAR decompression utility of your choice.
- NOTE: you may need to select All Files when opening your picture file with WinRAR, otherwise it won’t be listed in the directory view.
- Now you can extract the “hidden” files from your “hidden” RAR file.

Keep Swine Flu Away with Basic Precautions
Swine flu in India is spreading like wildfire, taking the toll to ten. Officials say there are currently more than 1000 cases of the H1N1 flu strain in India. Governments from all around the world are finding ways to combat this deadly disease. So what can you do to protect yourself? Stay calm and practice these 10 effective prevention tips.
1. Wash your hands frequently
Use the antibacterial soaps to cleanse your hands. Wash them often, at least 15 seconds and rinse with running water.
2. Get enough sleep
Try to get 8 hours of good sleep every night to keep your immune system in top flu-fighting shape.
3. Keep hydrated
Drink 8 to10 glasses of water each day to flush toxins from your system and maintain good moisture and mucous production in your sinuses.
4. Boost your immune system
Keeping your body strong, nourished, and ready to fight infection is important in flu prevention. So stick with whole grains, colorful vegetables, and vitamin-rich fruits.
5. Keep informed
The government is taking necessary steps to prevent the pandemic and periodically release guidelines to keep the pandemic away. Please make sure to keep up to date on the information and act in a calm manner.
6. Avoid alcohol
Apart from being a mood depressant, alcohol is an immune suppressant that can actually decrease your resistance to viral infections like swine flu. So stay away from alcoholic drinks so that your immune system may be strong.
7. Be physically active
Moderate exercise can support the immune system by increasing circulation and oxygenating the body. For example brisk walking for 30-40 minutes 3-4 times a week will significantly perk up your immunity.
8. Keep away from sick people
Flu virus spreads when particles dispersed into the air through a cough or sneeze reach someone else’s nose. So if you have to be around someone who is sick, try to stay a few feet away from them and especially, avoid physical contact.
9. Know when to get help
Consult your doctor if you have a cough and fever and follow their instructions, including taking medicine as prescribed.
10. Avoid crowded areas
Try to avoid unnecessary trips outside. Moreover, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Tulasi Can Keep Swine Flu AWAY

Tulsi can help keep swine flu away: Ayurvedic experts
Lucknow, May 27: Wonder herb Tulsi can not only keep the dreaded swine flu at bay but also help in fast recovery of an afflicted person, Ayurvedic practitioners claim.
"The anti-flu property of Tulsi has been discovered by medical experts across the world quite recently. Tulsi improves the body's overall defence mechanism including its ability to fight viral diseases. It was successfully used in combating Japanese Encephalitis and the same theory applies to swine flu," Dr U K Tiwari, a herbal medicine practitioner says.
Apart from acting as a preventive medicine in case of swine flu, Tulsi can help the patient recover faster..
"Even when a person has already contracted swine flu, Tulsi can help in speeding up the recovery process and also help in strengthening the immune system of the body," he claims.
Dr Bhupesh Patel, a lecturer at Gujarat Ayurved University , Jamnagar is also of the view that Tulsi can play an important role in controlling swine flu.
"Tulsi can control swine flu and it should be taken in fresh form. Juice or paste of at least 20-25 medium sized leaves should be consumed twice a day on an empty stomach."
This increases the resistance of the body and, thereby, reduces the chances of inviting swine flu," believes Patel.

Unless we make a conscious effort to take care of it, eye diseases will never cease. Hence, it is important for each person to know the basic healthy tips of eye care, which will help making your eyes an asset to you throughout your life.
How to have good Eyesight?
Most eye problems are attributed to stress, tension and laziness which lead to gradual failing of eyesight. Many people habitually strain their eyes by keeping them in a fixed position, staring at a whole scene rather than allowing steady movement. It is essential for the eye muscles to move freely in order to make the tiny adaptations necessary to centre on the object of your vision.
Exercises for improving Eyesight
There are some particular exercises which can help relax the eye muscles and optic nerve and use memory and imagination to improve coordination between the brain and eyes.
* Palming – It is a simple technique which can refresh your eyes. You just close your eyes and cover them with your palms by resting them on your cheek bones. Make sure not to put pressure on your eyeballs. Breathe slowly and evenly, relaxing and imagining deep blackness. Begin by doing this exercise for ten minutes, two or three times a day.
* Swinging – Keep the eyes mobile and stay relaxed. Then stand up and focus on a distant point, swaying gently from one side to another. Repeat as many times as you can, preferably hundred times daily, blinking as you sway. Blinking lubricates and cleans the eyes, which is extremely important if you spend several hours in front of the computer.
* Sunning – Try to do this exercise once a day. It requires a sunny day or a desk lamp with a luminescent bulb. Close your eyes and try to look directly at the sun through your closed eyes. When facing the sun, rotate your head slowly from side to side as far as possible. This exercise helps to get sunlight on the peripheral vision and enables more blood circulation to your neck. Do this for three to five minutes every day.
* Colour day – Choose any colour and look out for it throughout the day. When you see the particular colour, be aware of the colour rather than the form. For example, if it's a blue car, experience the shade of blue, not the car.
Common tips when doing eye exercises
You should follow some of the common tips when performing your eye exercises:
* Take off your glasses or contact lenses
* Concentrate intensely on your eyes and feel them working
* Do the exercises regularly for better results
Your eyes are the most important assets which should always be taken good care of. Vision is our primary means of relationship to the beautiful world around us. Hence, proper and regular care of the eyes is extremely essential for every individual.

What is meant by lesbianism?

What is meant by lesbianism?
Lesbianism is a term, which describes women whose primary sexual and emotional attractions are fulfilled by other women. Many myths exist concerning lesbianism. It is believed that women become lesbians because of bad experiences with men. It is also said that the lesbians are very masculine.
Are lesbians different people?
Like heterosexuals, lesbians also range in size, shape and appearance and have been found to be no different from them in relationships with parents and friends, drinking, self-esteem and many other issues. Lesbianism is simply the way a minority of our population expresses human love and sexuality. Studies on the mental health of lesbians show that they function like heterosexuals as far as their judgement, stability and adaptiveness are concerned.
What is the basic cause for lesbianism?
Research suggests that the homosexual orientation is decided very early in life. It is therefore unethical to change a person’s sexual orientation through therapy. Psychological techniques like psychotherapy may only help them in becoming comfortable with their sexual orientation.
What is homophobia and heterosexism?
Within our society, there is an irrational fear of homosexuality. This aversion to gay or lesbian people is called homophobia. Heterosexism is a term used to define prejudice and discrimination against gays and lesbians.
Homophobia can be called a health hazard because the prejudice from society may cause an individual to turn inward and become depressed. The fear of stigma from the society may lead to a refusal to seek medical attention when needed, ultimately resulting in poor health for the lesbian.
What could be done to help this important minority?
An attitudinal and behavioural change is required towards this group as a whole. Lesbianism says loving another woman is good, exciting and healthy. Therefore, the people need to be more informed in order to encourage a healthy approach.
An open forum is required where such people can meet, exchange their feelings and become more vocal with regard to issues that affect them.
