How to uncover the “No to All” option in Windows

As you’ve noticed, when you copy files from one location to another, Windows will pop up a message asking if you want to overwrite existing files (if they have the same name). There’s a “Yes to All” button, but there’s no “No to All” button - which means you have to click No for every single file you don’t want to overwrite. This can be a real hassle if the copying was an accident in the first place. This brief tip will show you how to use a “No to All” feature.

My husband is S/W Engineer by profession, I love him for his steady nature and I love the warm feeling when I lean against his broad shoulders.
Two years of courtship and now, five years into marriage, I would have to admit, that I am getting tired of it. The reasons of me loving him before, has now transformed into the cause of all my restlessness.

My husband is my complete opposite; his lack of sensitivity, and the inability of bringing romantic moments into our marriage has disheartened me about LOVE.


One day, I finally decided to tell him my decision, that I wanted a divorce.
"Why?" he asked, shocked.
"I am tired. There are no reasons for everything in the world!" I answered.
He kept silent the whole night, seemingly in deep thought. My feeling of disappointment only increased. Here was a man who was not able to even express his predicament, so what else could I expect from him?
And finally he asked me: "What can I do to change your mind?"
Somebody said it right... It's hard to change a person's personality, and I guess, I have started losing faith in him.
Looking deep into his eyes I slowly answered: "Here is the question. If you can answer and convince my heart, I will change my mind.
Let's say, I want a flower located on the face of a mountain cliff, and we both are sure that picking the flower will cause your death. Will you do it for me?"
He said: "I will give you your answer tomorrow...." My hopes just sank by listening to his response.
I woke up the next morning to find him gone, and saw a piece of paper with his scratchy handwriting underneath a milk glass, on the dining table near the front door, that goes....
My dear, "I would not pick that flower for you, but....please allow me to explain the reasons further.....

"When you use the computer you always mess up the Software programs, and you cry in front of the screen. I have to save my fingers so that I can help to restore the programs.

You always stare at the computer, and that will do nothing good for your eyes. I have to save my eyes so that when we grow old, I can help to clip your nails and help to remove those annoying white hairs. So I can also hold your hand while strolling down the beach, as you enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful sand...and tell you the colour of flowers, just like the colour of the glow on your young face...
Thus, my dear, unless I am sure that there is someone who loves you more than I do... I could not pick that flower yet, and die ... "

The myth of refreshing the desktop

"Do you refresh your desktop?". Ask this to any Windows user and 99% of them will reply with a "yes". Of course, there are various needs for refreshing the desktop but the majority of people who does it doesn't even know why he is doing it. Refreshing the desktop is perhaps the biggest computer myth among all Windows users.




Every single person I have met does this or at least used to do it. It's not known who first discovered this remarkably useless trick and what he achieved from it, but it just spread. Most new users learn this trick from other new users without caring to know what it does. Some do it devotedly just because others do it, while some others have various weird explanations for it. A few of them assumes that it refreshes the RAM, while some others believe that doing it will somehow keep their PCs running smooth and easy. I have seen some users obsessed with refreshing the desktop, doing it every 30 seconds or so. They have even learnt the keyboard shortcut - F5 (just to mention, these are the people who never use keyboard shortcuts). They would press the key and wouldn't release it for a long time, sending the desktop into a frenzy of refreshes.

What does a desktop refresh actually do?
Refreshing the desktop simply redraws the icons on the desktop. That's it! It doesn't refreshes the RAM. It doesn't clean your PC. It doesn't refreshes your computer the way it does to you when you wake up from a nap. Refreshing the desktop has absolutely no effect on the working or performance of the computer. So why is the tool there? As I said, refresh is used to re-display or redraw the icons on the desktop. Sometimes when you bring some changes to the desktop icons, the change doesn't get reflected instantly. In such cases, refreshing the desktop becomes necessary to bring the change to effect. Say, you have the desktop icons set to arrange themselves alphabetically on your desktop. When you add a new item to the desktop, this item wouldn't get arranged alphabetically, instead it would appear at the bottom of icon list on the desktop, irrespective of it's name. Now if you refresh the desktop, all the icons would be once more arranged alphabetically and the newly added item would go to it's appropriate position. This is what refresh is for. It is to re-display the desktop. Refresh has the same function when done in explorer.

So, if you are in the habit of refreshing the desktop, stop it. You are just wasting your time and effort. And the next time you see a person doing it, don't forget to explain to him the futility of this action.

Disable Windows Page file, save your hard disk

Warning: Some applications may have problems with a disabled page file !!

There are lots of myths and confusion surrounding Windows page file, for instance, this utter rubbish "thumb rule" that the page file should 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. Then there is the question of whether to use the page file at all. The page file is intended to serves as a substitute for physical memory, the RAM. In early days, when RAM was expensive it made sense to allocate a major portion of the system's memory requirement to the page file, to reduce cost. Today, cost is no longer an issue. 2 GB RAM has become the standard for every new PC. With so much memory available is there any logic to use the page file?

Why you should turn off the page file?

The problem with Windows is, no matter how much physical memory is installed on the system, it will always use the page file constantly swapping data between the RAM and the hard disk. Every time the page file is accessed, the elaborate system of sliders, arms, actuators and motors inside the hard disk are stirred into action. The spindle rotates and the arm moves repeatedly to and fro over the platters reading and writing bits of information on the hard disk. All throughout a session the operating system uses the page file thousands and millions of time! Look at the screenshot below, under the Page Fault column. Those figures indicates the number of times the page file was accessed.

Now, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that the more you use a device the less the period of life the device is going to have. This is particularly true for mechanical devices, devices that have moving parts, like the hard disk. Due to friction between various parts and stress from continues usage a hard disk wears out. This is the reason why hard disk and optical drives failure is so common while motherboard or processors rarely fail because of the absence of mechanical parts.

Disabling the page file will significantly reduce the wear and tear the hard disk suffers, and will extend the life of the hard disk. Besides, unused RAM is wasted RAM. What is the use of having GBs of memory only to leave it idle? Of course, you must have sufficient amount of RAM on your system to disable the page file. How much RAM is sufficient depends on the usage of your computer. If you have anything more than 1 GB, you can turn off the page file. If you feel that your computer might require more than the amount of RAM you have, then instead of turning of the page file set it to the minimum value of 2 MB. If the memory usage suddenly shoots up Windows will automatically increase the size of the memory temporarily. You won't be able to eliminate page file access completely if you set a value, though you will be able reduce it.

Regarding change in performance, you won't notice a difference. I have turned of the page file on my computer and it feels good to know that my hard disk is not thrashing.

NASA wants to take Internet to interplanetary level

Apparently, what leaves most people at awe doesn’t impress the NASA scientists a bit, like chatting with your buddies 8000 miles across continents at real time. NASA wants to put up a communication network that will allow them to chat, or communicate with various probes, rovers, orbiters and spacecraft exploring the solar system - effectively binding them together to form an interplanetary Internet.

At the interplanetary level communication delays are huge, and variable because the planets are in orbit around the sun. Existing communication protocols like the TCP/IP breaks down under such conditions. NASA has been performing tests on more robust network technologies, called Delay Tolerant Networking, or DTN, protocols, the second test of which was successfully conducted on the International Space Station.

The DTN protocols will extend the terrestrial Internet into space by overcoming a number of obstacles, including the extraordinary length of time it takes packets to move between separate hops in a deep-space network, the intermittent nature of network connections, and bit-scrambling solar radiation. On Earth, packets move from source to destination in milliseconds. By contrast, a one-way trip from Earth to Mars takes a minimum of 8 minutes. The constant motion of celestial bodies means that packets have to pause and wait for antennas to align as they hop from planet to probe to spacecraft.

Work on DTN began as early as 1998 and one of the co-inventor of the Internet's TCP/IP protocol, Vint Cerf, is also a key member of the group of scientists working on it.

Symantec has identified the top searches conducted by kids online this summer through its family safety service, OnlineFamily.Norton,* and some of the results may surprise parents and leave them asking “Who is Fred?”

According to OnlineFamily.Norton, kids’ top 100 search terms include sites like YouTube, eBay and Craigslist, as well as social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. The words “sex” and “porn” also made it to the top, ranking number four and six respectively. Number nine on the list was “fred,” for Fred Figglehorn, a popular fictional character whose YouTube channel has become a hit among kids. Between February 2009 and July 2009, Symantec tracked a total of 3.5 million searches that were submitted by users of their OnlineFamily.Norton service. The list of search terms was ranked from those submitted most frequently to those submitted the least. In order to be included in the list of kids’ top search terms, a search term had to have been submitted at least 50 times by registered users of OnlineFamily.Norton.

Bhuvan download toolbar ready

New Delhi: The ISRO's revolutionary earth mapping tool �Bhuvan' was launched here today. The Bhuvan toolbar can be downloaded from http://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in

The website is available in beta version.

It is believed that the ISRO's latest earth mapping tool have more features than Google Earth.

The Bhuvan is focused on Indian sub-continent barring all sensitive locations such as military and nuclear installations .

ISRO's Bhuvan is latest version of Google Earth, which allows common man to zoom into any part of the world on their personal computer using satellite images.

The new mapping service Bhuvan is a Sanskrit word of earth. It will allow users to have a closer look at any part of the subcontinent. Bhuvan will provide the pictures of objects as small as a car on the road to build three-dimensional map of the world via ISRO's seven remote sensing satellites.

The degree of resolution showcased is based on points of interest and popularity, but most of the Indian terrain is covered upto at least six meters of resolution with the least spatial resolution being 55 meters.

ശരീരം ഇന്‍ഷുര്‍ ചെയ്യാനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹം പരസ്യമായി പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ താരമാണ്‌ മല്ലിക. എന്തായാലും ഇതിനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങള്‍ താരം തുടങ്ങിക്കഴിഞ്ഞുവെന്നാണ്‌ കേള്‍ക്കുന്നത്‌.

ലോപ്പസ്‌ തന്റെ സുന്ദരമായ മാറിടങ്ങള്‍ ഒരു ബില്യണ്‍ ഡോളറിന്‌ ഇന്‍ഷുര്‍ ചെയ്‌തപ്പോള്‍ ഡേവിഡ്‌ ബക്കാം തന്റെ കാലുകള്‍ 70 മില്യണ്‍ ഡോളറിനാണ്‌ ഇന്‍ഷുര്‍ ചെയ്‌തത്‌. എന്തായാലും മല്ലിക സ്വന്തം ശരീരത്തിന്‌ എത്രതുകയുടെ ഇന്‍ഷുറന്‍സാണ്‌ എടുക്കുന്നതെന്നകാര്യം ഇതേവരെ പുറത്തുവിട്ടിട്ടില്ല.

ബോഡിഗാര്‍ഡ്‌ പൊലീസ്‌ കാവലില്‍

ദിലീപ്‌-നയന്‍താര എന്നിവരെ കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളാക്കി സിദ്ദിഖ്‌ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ബോഡിഗാര്‍ഡിന്റെ ഷൂട്ടിങ്‌ ഇനി പൊലീസ്‌ കാവലില്‍. ചിത്രത്തില്‍ ഷൂട്ടിങ്‌ ലൊക്കേഷന്‌ സംരക്ഷണം നല്‍കണമെന്ന്‌ ഹൈക്കോടതി പൊലീസിന്‌ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം നല്‌കി.

സിനിമാ സാങ്കേതിക പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരുടെ സംഘടനകളായ ഫെഫ്‌കയും മാക്ടയും തമ്മില്‍ തര്‍ക്കങ്ങളുണ്ടെന്നും അതു കൊണ്ട്‌ മാക്ട പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ ഷൂട്ടിങ്‌ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ സാധ്യതയുണ്ടെന്നും ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി നിര്‍മാതാവ്‌ ജോണി സാഗരിക നല്‍കിയ ഹര്‍ജിയിലാണ്‌ ഉത്തരവ്‌.
ആഗസ്‌റ്റ്‌ നാലിന്‌ ആരംഭിച്ച ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ മൂന്നാംഘട്ട ചിത്രീകരണം സെപ്‌റ്റംബര്‍ രണ്ടിന്‌ തീര്‍ക്കാനാണ്‌ പദ്ധതി. ഇതിനിടെ മാക്ട ഈ മാസം 13ന്‌ സമരം തുടങ്ങിയേക്കുമെന്ന്‌ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ്‌ നിര്‍മാതാവ്‌ പൊലീസ്‌ സംരക്ഷണം തേടിയത്‌. ഇതിന്‌ മുമ്പും മാക്ട പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ ബോഡിഗാര്‍ഡിന്റെ ഷൂട്ടിങ്‌ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചിരുന്നു.

പാലക്കാട്‌, കോട്ടയം, തൃശൂര്‍, ഇടുക്കി എന്നീ ജില്ലകളിലെ പൊലീസ്‌ സൂപ്രണ്ടിനും എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ പൊലീസ്‌ കമ്മീഷണര്‍ക്കും ഇത്‌ സംബന്ധിച്ച്‌ അറിയിപ്പ്‌ നല്‍കാന്‍ ഹൈക്കോടതി നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം നല്‍കി.
